Christmas cards first came about in the year 1843 when the first cards were commissioned by Sir Henry Cole and were illustrated by John Callcott Horsley in London. The main picture showed three generations of family raising a toast to the card’s recipient; on either side were scenes of charity, with food and clothing being handed out. 2000 cards were printed and sold that year for a shilling each. Fast forward 174 years, and Christmas cards remain a staple tradition. Christmas cards are not only a fun way to spread Christmas cheer and well-wishes to family and friends, but they are also a great way for businesses to show appreciation for their customers, reinforce business relationships and retain brand awareness.
Here are a few tips to sending Christmas cards for business: Use your handwriting if possible. Add personalization to your cards by signing your name, hand-addressing the envelope, and adding a nice note. Show your customers that you took the time to give their card a personal touch. Keep your cards professional. Avoid humor that may be misconstrued or offensive. Keeps your cards tasteful and sincere as they are a reflection of your business and brand. Maintain an accurate list. Keep your list current and up-to-date with correct names and addresses. Make sure you’re not sending a card to someone who has left. As you gain new contacts throughout the year, be sure to add them to your list. And unless you know the contact socially, always send the card to their office versus their home. Send them on time. Ideally cards should be in the mail by the second week of December. Many companies close down for part of the holiday, so be sure your clients receive your card before the break. Make them personal. Don't just go out and buy a packet of generic Christmas cards. Get a designer to make a card that is reflective of your business branding and include your logo.
